From the 13th century, there is evidence of a square-shaped watchtower at Batz locality. We do not know what was built first: the tower or the village of Castillon-Debats? The locality has been spelled differently over the centuries, but we do know that it was the birthplace of the disappeared "Lords of Batz de Castillon".
The most famous of these lords was undoubtedly Manaud III de Batz Leaumont, lord of Batz, Suberbies et de Sainte Cristie. He distinguished himself during the siege of Eauze, where he saved the life of king Henry IV, who wrote two letters to thank him, referring to him as "his reaper" (archives of the city of Tarbes). Manaud's son, Hercule, died without descendant around 1650.
The castle was bought by the du Lin de Marsan family and then, on June 20th 1732, by Messire François de Ferragut-Montus, whose descendants still live there today.
Batz suffered during the French revolution. It was mainly during the 19th century that Batz was enlarged and embellished by its successive owners, mainly strong-willed women who fought to maintain, safeguard and pass on this beautiful house.
